"Teach Them Diligently"

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall
bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."  ~ Deuteronomy 6:4-9

These scripture verses were part of the sermon at the church we visited for the second time today. The sermon was actually from Genesis on the end of Jacob's life and God's promises but these verses were tied in. I love how straight forward they are. So direct!

DILIGENTLY teach your children. As a mom (and for dads too) I have the opportunity to share in a multitude of ways throughout each day why we LOVE God and how we can love Him with "all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might." When Jesus (Matthew 22:36-38) was asked what the greatest teaching from the law was, he responded by quoting Moses' words from Deuteronomy and added, "This is the great and first commandment." Every little thing I do impacts my testimony to my own children. Moses reminds us of how our lives should be so intertwined with our relationship with God that our devotion and LOVE for Him spill forth into everything we do ("when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise."). Our homes are our first (priority-wise) mission field!

Other verses which may be useful in teaching LOVE of the Father to our children:
  • "If you love me, you will keep my commandments." ~ John 14:15
  • "And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother." ~ 1 John 4:21
  • "For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome." ~ 1 John 5:3
  • "We love him, because he first loved us." ~ 1 John 4:19
